How refrigerated air dryers work: Compressed air enters a heat exchanger and is pre-cooled. The compressed air then enters the air-to-refrigerant heat exchanger where it is further cooled by the refrigeration system. As the air is cooled, water vapor condenses into liquid droplets. The air and entrained water droplets then enter the separator where liquid water is removed. An automatic drain discharges the collected water from the system.

Hankison air-cooled aftercoolers use ambient air to cool the hot air leaving an air compressor (typically 180 to 350F) to usable levels (100 to 120F). As the air cools, about 70% of the water vapor present condenses into liquid water which should be removed with a separator. Aftercoolers can be installed so that this normally wasted heat can be used to heat your shop.

Hankinson Water-Cooled Aftercoolers

 |
Hankison water-cooled aftercoolers consist of a shell-and-tube heat exchanger in which compressed air in the tubes are cooled to within 10 to 20F (6 to 11C) of the temperature of the cooling water in the shell. As the air cools, up to 70% of the water vapor present condenses to a liquid which can then be removed by a separator.
